THE DAIRY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - THEATER The Dairy Center for the Arts is the adaptive re-use of a 23,000 square-foot abandoned dairy building in the heart of Boulder. Over the years, SSA has worked with The Dairy on various remodels s to turn this “diamond in the rough” into a local, multi-disciplined arts facility. We accomplished our initial goal through a four-year, four-phase program that totaled a modest $2.7 million in renovation costs. The Dairy is now recognized as a national model for facilitating cooperative relations among arts organizations and for its adaptive re-use of an abandoned building. The re-use and renovation included a 264-seat performance hall, a 99-seat dramatic theater, a dance studio, several art and movement studios, an expanded art gallery, numerous administrative offices, a new lobby and cafe, and modern restrooms and box office facilities. The acoustic isolation of adjacent spaces was also assured, and structural improvements including a new roof, and exterior improve¬ments to lighting, landscaping and access were completed. Today, The Dairy provides low-cost rent to fifteen art organizations, hosts private and Currently, working with input from the board of directors and staff, SSA has created a dramatic and efficiently designed “New Face of the Dairy.” The concept is based on enclosing approximately two-thirds of the outside patio to create more programming and gallery space, as well as a strong sense of entry. |
