Nestled in the beautiful Rio Blanco Basin at the base of the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, Mountain Bird Ranch is a 1,200-acre paradise and retreat built for Dan Folgerberg. Architectural services involved complete master planning for the Ranch, including an 8,600 square-foot main house, a gazebo, caretaker’s quarters, a 12,000 square foot indoor riding area, a traditional hay barn, and two mountain lakes.
At an altitude of 8,900 feet, winter snows average 400 inches annually, making snow management crucial to the design process. The classic Victorian styling with steeply pitched roofs, wide eaves and second-story dormers easily handles the winter environment. Other exterior features include walls of native stone, wood timbers, copper chimney caps, towers and a classic octagonal turret.
