02.24.11 Essence of art-house: Boedecker Theater offers a new venue for classic films Boulder Daily Camera There's a new scent emanating from the southeast portion of Boulder's Dairy Center for the Arts. It's the essence of new carpet and seats, mixed with new electronic equipment. Soon, though, a different aroma will waft its way through the Dairy Center: popcorn. The Boedecker Theater, the city's new art-house cinema, opens to the public on Wednesday. So does its popcorn machine. Construction of the cinema, housed in the wing that formerly housed a public television studio at the Dairy, began last fall. But the idea to bring an art-house cinema with state-of-the-art technology to Boulder was hatched in 2009. "We were looking for what was underserved," said Rich Harris, the Dairy Center's executive director. |

08.03.10 Boulder's Dairy Center to receive new entry way, thanks to Western Disposal After 18 years of using the same outdated entrance that Watts-Hardy Dairy employees used when milk was still processed on the premises, Boulder's Dairy Center for the Arts will soon be adding a new entryway. Officials announced Tuesday that Western Disposal Services will be donating $300,000 to the arts center over the next three years. The money will be used to build a new facade and lobby area for the building, part of a larger construction project that will add an art-house movie theater. |

03.10 The Boulder Planning Board on February 4 unanimously approved a site review that clears the way for completing the adaptive reuse of The Dairy Center for the Arts, our beloved former milk-processing plant, into a state of the art high-tech arts facility. As you know, plans include a digital cinema theater, already funded by a generous grant from The Boeedecker Foundation, and a renovated façade, the New Face of The Dairy, which includes a beautiful glass atrium that will complete the repurposing of our historic building. The planning board took only 20 minutes to discuss and approve the Dairys plans. Planning Board member Elise Jones said, "this looks like a really good project and we fully support The Dairy for their contribution to the community." Stephen Sparn, longtime friend of The Dairy and architect for the New Face, told the planning board that The Dairy has obtained evening access to additional parking spaces in nearby existing lots to increase the amount of available parking without creating new lots. Most of the need for parking is during evening hours when nearby office buildings are not using their spaces. Another 36 bicycle parking spots will also be added. In addition, we are looking into the possibility of putting a photovoltaic solar system on the roof of The Dairy. We'll have bids from a handful of vendors within the next couple of weeks, after which we'll look at all the data to see if this project makes fiscal and environmental sense. |

02.08 The New Face of The Dairy . Working with input from the board of directors and the staff, SSA has created a dramatic and efficiently designed “New Face of the Dairy.” The concept is based on enclosing approximately two-thirds of the outside patio to create more programming and gallery space, as well as a strong sense of entry to The Dairy. "The New Face of The Dairy" will assure that growing crowds will continue to be able to enjoy adequate space with a safe and convenient entry. We are working with the City of Boulder to meet or exceed Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, making the building truly accessible. |
